Corkscrew-wielding scammer posed as a police officer and robbed an ATM in Queens

A scammer who tried to impersonate a police officer robbed a man with a corkscrew at an ATM in Queens, police said on Thursday.

The 64-year-old victim had just finished depositing cash at TD Bank on Queens Blvd. Near Albion Avenue in Elmhurst around 3:05 am on Jan. 26, police said, when he began exiting the lobby.

When he opened the door, the robber blocked his path, pulled out a corkscrew and told the victim that he was a police officer.

He threatened the man and brandished a corkscrew, demanding that he hand over all the money he had left with him.

According to police, the victim handed over $400 and the thief ran away without harming him.

Police are still looking for the thief and are asking the public for help in identifying him.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
