Prospect Park rapist Mungley Lucas gets 20 years for assaulting Brooklyn grandmother

A perpetrator with a Bible and a criminal record was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in prison for repeatedly raping a Brooklyn grandmother in the horrific 2018 attack in Prospect Park.

Mungley Lucas, 32, a homeless man with a long list of charges, stood silent during the Brooklyn Supreme Court hearing, refusing to speak as his outraged victim recounted the day’s lingering nightmares.

“My life has changed forever,” said a 63-year-old woman who was present at the sentencing and continues to be harassed by sexual assault in a statement. “The emotional impact will be felt for years to come.”

The woman required therapy and sedatives after the attack happened shortly after she drove her grandchildren to a birthday party, Assistant District Attorney Linda Weinman said.

“He poses a security threat to the people of Brooklyn,” she said of the defendant.

Authorities said Lucas did not apologize for the rape on November 18, 2018, when he jumped on a woman from behind before placing her under a chokehold, and the victim expressed her anger at his claims of a consensual meeting.

“I just got out of jail and I don’t care,” authorities quoted Lucas as saying to his victim during the attack.

Prosecutors charged Lucas with Lucas threatening to stab and shoot a woman, then rape her three times before breaking into a parked van and attempting to rape her again.

Mowgli Lucas is sentenced to 20 years in prison on multiple charges including sexual assault and robbery in Brooklyn Superior Court on Thursday, March 2, 2023.

During the attacks, Lucas carried a Bible with him and left a good book at the scene of the heinous crime, authorities say. The victim recalled how Lucas told her: “You will not see your grandchildren” when he raped her.

How did he know that I have grandchildren? she asked after the hearing. “It really scared me.”

Judge Heidi Cesare, who also sentenced Lucas to 15 years of probation after his release and called for him to be placed on the sex offender registry, said she was sending a message.

“It’s meant to protect society from you,” she said. “Brooklyn is a city of millions of people who want to stay safe. Brooklyn is home to countless women, grandmothers who should be able to take their grandchildren to a party… and come home.”

Cesare then addressed the victim: “Your words are important. The court hears you. The court heard you when you testified.”

Lucas was identified by a whistleblower as a former resident of a homeless shelter in Queens, and police used video footage to track him down prior to his arrest in November 2018.

Mungli Lucas was released from Brooklyn SVU on November 28, 2018 on charges of rape.

Lucas lived at the time in a homeless shelter near LaGuardia Airport and had been on the streets since his release five months earlier after being arrested for a robbery in Brooklyn.

The accused has served a couple of state prison terms.

The judge ignored defense attorney John Godfrey’s claim that his client maintained his innocence in the assault and denied his request for a reduced sentence. Lucas previously served time for possession of a weapon and attempted robbery.

According to the victim, she started going to self-defense classes after she survived the rape.

“I could have lost him and never come back,” she said. “I refuse to let anyone take my life in that sense.”
