Police looking for second man involved in murder of Upper West Side grandmother

Police are looking for a second man they believe was involved in the murder of an Upper West Side grandmother who was strangled in her apartment.

On Monday, police released photos of a man wanted in connection with the murder of Maria Hernandez, 74, who was killed in her apartment on W. 83rd St. off Columbus Avenue last Wednesday.

Police said her sister found the elderly woman dead, with her hands and feet bound and gagged.

On Saturday, police arrested the former building manager, Lashon Makki, 47, and charged him with murder, attempted murder and burglary.

The detectives don’t believe McKee worked alone. He was captured on surveillance footage with another man at some point before or after Hernandez’s murder, sources say.

McKee was held without bail after being charged in Manhattan criminal court on Sunday, where prosecutors said the killing was premeditated, citing a break-in in the current superintendent’s basement office prior to the murder.

LaShawn Makki appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of attempted murder, murder and 2 counts of burglary in the death of 74-year-old Maria Hernandez.

Only a video recorder was stolen that would record footage from surveillance cameras.

McKee worked in the building temporarily after serving a sentence for assault in 1999 and being released on parole, said McKee’s lawyer with New York County Protective Services.

Police have released photos of another person they believe was involved in Hernandez’s murder and are asking the public for help in identifying him.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
