New Jersey Republican MP killed in apparent ‘targeted’ attack

A Republican member of the New Jersey City Council was gunned down Wednesday night outside his residence.

According to WABC-TV, council member Eunice Dwumfur of Sayreville, New Jersey, was found shot multiple times in her car near the apartment complex she lived in.

Police said the car crashed after Dumfur was shot dead. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Eunice was a dedicated member of our City Council who genuinely strived to serve our residents,” Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said in a statement, according to NJ.com. “The fact that she was taken from us as a result of this heinous criminal act makes this incident all the more horrific.”

“In addition to her dedication to the community, I can share that she was a woman of deep faith and worked hard to integrate her strong Christian beliefs into her daily life as a person and community leader,” she said.

Police said she was the target of the attack, according to WABC. Community organizer Charlie Kratovil called her murder a “targeted” attack.

Police are investigating but have so far said they do not know the motive for the shooting.

Is crime a serious problem?

According to RLS Media, witnesses said the shooter fled towards nearby Garden State Boulevard.

Dumfur was elected to the council in 2021. According to WNBC, she worked as an IT specialist.

According to the Daily Mail, she was the Church Director of the Royal Assembly of Champions based in Nigeria.

According to NJ.com, Dumfur was a member of the Sayreville Public Relations Commission.

“She was shot when she was returning home. She was a woman full of life,” commission member Mahesh Chitnis said, according to the New York Post. “Eunice rest in peace my friend…”

“I’m shocked, scared and heartbroken.”

Sayreville Republican Chairwoman Karen Bailey Bebert said Dwumfour “was the epitome of Sayreville, the embodiment of the American Dream, overcoming adversity with courage and a smile,” according to the Daily Mail.

“And always give time and love to others. She was the epitome of Seyreville and all who were lucky enough to know her will miss her terribly,” she said.
