Laurie Lightfoot debacle shows Windy City voters know progressive BS is failing

Good riddance to Chicago Mayor Laurie Lightfoot, the first sitting president to qualify for the Windy City in four decades. But the city could be at its worst!

Lightfoot combined the worst excesses of old-school Chicago machine politics with the political recipes of the far left, especially on crime. Result? A loud rebuke to urban voters tired of soaring violence – in 2021, the number of murders reached a 25-year high; violent crime overall rose 40% under her leadership — and Lightfoot’s undisguised contempt (she once told an alderman, concerned about George Floyd’s riots, that he was “100% full of shit”).

Lightfoot refuses to draw the obvious conclusion, absurdly blaming racism for his defeat. When asked if she had been treated unfairly, she replied, “I am a black woman in America. Of course.” These are today’s Democratic leftists: they deny the simple fact that ordinary citizens want safe streets, good schools and quality jobs, regardless of race or gender.

And one of two successful runoff candidates, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, is black, although he may be more to the left than Lightfoot. He’s a full-fledged protector of the police and the darling of the Chicago Teachers’ Union (so radical and selfish that the United Teachers Federation of New York looks almost endearing). But Paul Wallas, another Democrat heading for a runoff, appears to be serious about getting the city’s huge problems under control.

For the sake of Chicago, let’s hope the voters reject the left completely and vote for sanity in April.
