Hey, Chuck Schumer, try to deal with crime in New York like you’re from D.C.

Remember when Chuck Schumer took care of New York? Or at least pretended he did?

This was before he became Majority Leader in the US Senate—a pretty big deal, though one that didn’t do much for the people back home.

With New York City spending $5 million a day on President Biden’s migrant shelter, it seems that Schumer could be more energetic about border integrity.

Not at all.

And now Chuck from Brooklyn seems to care more about crime in Washington DC than the unrest in his hometown.

Protect the Empire

On Tuesday, Schumer did his part to repeal DC’s local legislation, which would essentially do the same to the county that New York City’s misguided criminal justice “reforms” did to the Empire State, which began three years ago.

And good for him. DC doesn’t need more crime.

But so does Gotham – and yet Schumer silently looks away as Mayor Adams pleads with New York lawmakers to make amends.

Of course, Schumer will be listened to: when longtime nemesis Andrew Cuomo retired from public life, Chuck became the unrivaled Incredible Hulk of New York politics.

Usually, of course, Schumer should stick to his DC duties, leaving New York affairs to its elected leaders as they are.

But there’s a catch: real leaders lead. To date, Governor Hochul, Assembly Speaker Carl Histie, and State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins have quietly watched crime stifle the recovery from COVID, not to mention the loss of life.

This is partly because they are progressive Democrats, a party that decided that the right strategic response to the murder of a professional criminal by a rogue cop was to gut America’s penal codes.

So now crime is experiencing a resurgence in the style of the early 90s in establishments run by progressive Democrats. Go find out.

But can this change?

Last week, blood-splattered Chicago voters ousted Mayor Laurie Lightfoot; Locals say it was all because of crime.

Important people elsewhere seemed to notice: the White House immediately declared its opposition to the DC crime bill, after which Schumer, rarely at the forefront of anything reasonable, announced that he would vote with the Republicans against the bill.

Because Congress has to approve important local D.C. legislation, it effectively killed him.

And now comes the news that Hochul is pressuring the Legislature to repeal the tragically ill-advised “reforms.”

“We’re talking about protecting society in a way that people think is common sense,” she said on Tuesday.

The precedent suggests that the key word here is “talk,” but if that’s what she means, she’ll need help.

This is where Schumer comes in. Or could.

Long ago, the American Civil Liberties Union always gnawed at a senator’s leg about crime. “Whatever [Schumer] perceives it as a tough stance towards the crime,” the ACLU lawyer said at the time.

Oh, the good old days.

But wouldn’t it be nice if Chuck from Brooklyn went back to his roots?

Stern’s phone calls to Hohulu, Histie, and Stuart-Cousins would be as much of a help in Gotham as his position in DC.

Hold on, senator.
