Fort Worth leaders to vote on plan to regulate short-term rentals

The Fort Worth City Council is due to vote to require short-term rental property owners to register with the city.

Short-term rentals are residential properties that guests can rent for up to a month, including through companies like Airbnb and VRBO.

Fort Worth has been considering the new rules for a while after noticing some short-term rentals appearing in unauthorized areas. They also received complaints from those who live near the houses.

The latest proposal will add an annual fee to rental operators and require guests to pay the same tax as a hotel.

The hotel will be limited to 12 guests at a time and will only allow on-site parking. Events and parties will be prohibited.

Property registration can be canceled based on violations.

People renting accommodation to guests fear that additional rules will cost too much.

If the registration order is passed, the City will send letters to property owners and notify them of the May 1 deadline for registration.
