‘Doesn’t work’: NYC pizza heroes serve slices a year after stabbing

Whatever the case, these pizza makers are head and shoulders above them.

The father-son group that foiled a brutal robbery near their Queens store almost a year ago has a message for crime-weary New Yorkers: don’t lose hope – or your rent.

“We are real New Yorkers. We do not run from such things. I was born and raised in this city,” the cheeky Louis Suljovic told The Post this week.

Sulovich, 39, and his father, Kazim Suljovic, 69, were stabbed and had a collapsed lung in the March 26 incident, they had to close their shop for more than a month, but they never considered fleeing the Big Apple. Mail.

Nearly a year later, they are still throwing slices – and smiling.

“This is my home [the pizzeria]. I’m there 90 hours a week,” war veteran Louis explained. “I see children [in the neighborhood] When they grow up, I see the kids get married and then they bring their families to my store. These are my friends, these are my family members. Nobody is going to push me out of my house. These are my neighbors.”

“My dad. They don’t make men like him anymore,” he added. “He’s very stubborn, very strong-willed, and nothing can push him out.”

Louis and Kazim were working at their pizzeria on Baxter Avenue in Elmhurst when their father spotted Yoon Hee Chang, 61, being robbed outside their restaurant.

The victim was thrown to the ground, stabbed and robbed.

“I see a woman on the floor and three people around her. I say, “What are they doing?” They rob her,” said Kazim.

The bold elder ran out of the dining room to help and called for Louis to follow him. The younger Sulyovich caught up with the impudent bandits and “wasn’t going to let go,” Louis said.

Louis was stabbed once in the back, and his father was stabbed nine times, each with a collapsed lung. Louis spent several days in Elmhurst Hospital, while his father spent several weeks. Louie’s Pizzeria was closed until early May.

Two men, 30-year-old Robert Vack and 18-year-old Supreme Gooding, were arrested and charged with robbery, assault and illegal possession of weapons. A month later, the couple were charged with attempted murder in Elmhurst and a separate assault on a 75-year-old woman 10 days earlier, according to the Queens District Attorney’s office.

“People like that shouldn’t have gone out at all. But since we have a terrible bail system and bail reform, they would have been put in jail for something else. Our system failed us,” Louis said.

Louie doesn’t have a plan for a new pizza to celebrate their prowess, but maybe Humble Pie is the order.

“We tried to hide and not be noticed,” Louis said, adding: “We are famous for our grandma’s pie, and it is very tasty.”

Chang, the woman allegedly attacked by Wack and Gooding, ended up in jail “once or twice” after the attack.

“She’s cool too,” Louis said.

He thought about somehow commemorating the anniversary of the attack, but he doesn’t lose sleep over the unfortunate incident.

“I dream about what I have to do the next day. Two slices and a soda,” Louis said. “I’m turning 40 soon. It’s another day in paradise.”
