Colorado man ‘intentionally’ crashes pickup truck into police station

A Colorado man “intentionally” rammed his pickup truck into the front doors of a police station after claiming people were “chasing him,” police said.

Nathan David Chacon, 45, crashed his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado through the glass doors and into the lobby of the Grand Junction Police Station after stopping at a counter inside around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, shocking footage released by the department.

According to Chacon’s affidavit, there were 11 employees working behind the counter in the offices at the time. No harm done.

The officers ran into the lobby with weapons at the ready and ordered Chacon to get out of the car, the video shows. He was forced to lie on the ground before being taken into custody without incident.

He did not need medical attention, and he was placed in a pre-trial detention cell, where he voluntarily communicated with the police.

According to the affidavit, over the past few years, Chacon received at least 90 calls, during which he reported “strange events that have no basis.”

He called the police several times in the days before the accident, scolded the officers on the phone and then hung up in desperation, according to his arrest testimony. It is not clear what he told them.

Chacón told police that on Thursday morning he was “chased” by several vehicles as he drove out of town, causing him to evade his pursuers.

Video outside the police station shows the full-size pickup truck pulling into the parking lot before making a sharp left turn through the front doors without any hesitation.

He told police that when he pulled into the parking lot, “he didn’t want to be killed, so he decided to drive into the lobby.” He told the officer that he knew it was a “stupid” idea, but felt he had to do it “to be heard.”

Chacón was arrested and charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, attempted assault using a vehicle, criminal disorderly conduct, and reckless endangerment.

Damage to the lobby, front doors, and bulletproof window panes is estimated at more than $100,000 but less than $1,000,000, according to police.
