Thought I had to wear dresses to ‘please God’: Ginger Duggar Vuolo talks about her scary childhood

Reality TV star Ginger Duggar Vuolo talks about her childhood.

In an exclusive interview with People, she said fear was a “huge part” of her childhood.

“I thought I should only wear skirts and dresses to please God. Music with drums, places I’ve visited or wrong friendships can all be harmful,” she added.

Her parents, Michelle Duggar and Jim Bob Duggar, raised her and her 18 siblings to openly follow the teachings of the Life Principles Institute, an organization founded by Bill Gotthard in 1961.

According to NBC News, in 2014 Gotthard resigned from the board of directors of IBLP after he was accused of molesting and sexually harassing women in the organization.

“My actions of holding hands, hugging and touching legs or hair with girls were beyond prudence and were wrong,” the statement said.

Vuolo said Gotthard’s teachings were based on “fear and superstition”.

“[Gothard’s] The teachings in a nutshell are based on fear and superstition and leave you in a state where you feel like, “I don’t know what God expects of me,” said the 29-year-old. “Fear shackled me with anxiety. I was afraid of the outside world.”

In 2017, she began to realize how “harmful” his teachings were, which led her to leave the organization altogether.

“His teachings were so harmful and I see more and more of the consequences of this in the lives of my friends and the people who grew up with me in this community. There are a lot of iconic trends,” she said.

John 8:36 says, “Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.”

Vuolo is still a devout Christian, and she said her intention to write her new memoir Getting Really Free was to help others who may still be stuck in the Gotthard teachings.

“That’s the beauty of this trip,” she said. “The teaching I grew up with was harmful, it was destructive, and its effects will be lasting. But I know other people are struggling and people who are still stuck.”

She concluded by saying, “I want to share my story and maybe it will help free at least one person.”
