A Florida man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for trampling a man to death in Midtown in 2018, the district attorney says.

HOUSTON. A Florida man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for trampling a man to death in downtown Houston in 2018, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s office.

Teddy Greer, 36, was in Houston on his way home to Florida when it happened.

The district attorney’s office said that on April 11, 2018, Greer was trying to buy drugs when he was robbed by a woman and three men. Later that night, Greer spoke to 50-year-old Randy Thompson, whom he believed to be one of those who robbed him.

According to the district attorney’s office, Greer and Thompson were seen on video walking together. Greer told police that when Thompson turned his back, he hit him in the head and stomped on him until Thompson died.

“There is no evidence that Randy Thompson was involved in the $10 theft, but even if he was involved, it does not warrant a death sentence,” said Assistant District Attorney Erika Robinson Winsor, who led the case. “It’s just pointless.

“It was a senseless and brutal beating just because this killer chose to act as judge, jury and executioner,” District Attorney Kim Ogg said. “This man hid his intentions in order to gain the trust of the victim, and moments later he brutally beat her to death.”
