Two people critically hurt in raging Brooklyn apartment fire
Two people, including an elderly woman, were critically hurt in a raging Brooklyn apartment fire early Monday, FDNY officials said.
The blaze broke out about 4:25 a.m. inside the apartment on Berry St. near Broadway in Williamsburg, officials said. It took 106 firefighters an hour and 10 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Witnesses saw the daughter of the elderly woman stomping on her mother’s mattress in a failed attempt to put out the flames.
The two victims were hospitalized in critical condition. Two other residents were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Multiple residents made it to safety using the fire escape.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The apartment where the fire started was completely gutted by the blaze and there was severe damage to the hallway.
