Teen, 15, dies after shooting on Queens subway train; police seek suspects who fled in Rockaways

A 15-year-old boy died after he was shot in the chest Friday during a battle between quarreling groups of teens on a subway train in Queens, police said.

During the battle aboard the Far Rockaway-bound A train, a fight broke out between two groups — and according to the subway conductor, someone in one of the groups called for backup, said police sources.

Police investigate after a teenager was shot at the Mott Avenue subway station in Far Rockaway, Queens on Friday afternoon.

Two more teens boarded the train at Beach 25th St., said the sources.

As the train pulled into its final stop at Far Rockaway/Mott Ave. around 3:45 p.m., a shot was fired, said cops.

A good Samaritans dragged the wounded teen from the train to the subway platform, and two police officers patrolling the station rushed to the scene and performed CPR, said NYPD Transit Bureau Chief Jason Wilcox.

EMS took the teen to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, but he could not be saved.

The shooter got away.

Police search for evidence in the shooting death of the teenage boy, 15.

Police were trying Friday night to determine the motive for the shooting.

“This was not a random act of violence. There was definitely a dispute on the train,” said Wilcox.

The nature of the dispute between the teen groups — including whether it involved gang activity — was not clear, Wilcox said.

Police were seeking the suspect or suspects in the case later Friday, and Wilcox said police need the public’s help solving the crime.

“There were numerous people on that train who may have seen what transpired,” Wilcox said. He said anyone with information should call the NYPD’s CrimeStoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS (7477).

Through Sunday, major crime in the nation’s largest subway system was up 41%. As of Sunday, police had counted 17 shootings in the system, up from three shootings in the same period of 2021.
