Richardson’s man jailed for actions during January 6 Capitol attack

WASHINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) A federal judge today ruled that a Texas man will spend more than three years in prison for assaulting a police officer and other offenses he committed during the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Garrett Miller, 36, of Richardson, was sentenced Wednesday to 38 months in prison after pleading guilty in December 2022 to charges that included assaulting a police officer, threatening, three counts of interference with police, breaking into a building with restricted access, disturbance or disruption. hold on limited grounds, blocking entrances and exits and demonstrating at the Capitol.

US District Court Judge Carl J. Nichols also sentenced Miller to 36 months of supervised release following his release from prison.

Court documents showed that Miller went to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, with the intention of stopping the certification of the 2020 presidential election. He brought tools he called “riot control gear” – a rope, a grappling hook, a mouth guard and a protective cap – and said he was looking forward to fighting “soft” people in Washington, DC.

Prosecutors said Miller was “obsessed” with the election results and believed they were stolen. He had a history of using social media to post threats to famous people, including Senator Chuck Schumer, Mark Zuckerburg and Jack Dorsey.

At Captol, Miller was apparently so destructive that he was detained at the east front of the building twice, the second time using handcuffs. He promised to leave and was released, but instead stayed and recorded his conversations about the revolution.

Eventually, Miller broke past the Capitol police and entered the Rotunda. He made it to the old Senate Chamber before being turned back. But when Capitol and Metro cops tried to quell the unrest from the compound, Miller became violent and started brawling with at least six officers.

After being kicked out of the building, Miller traveled to the Western Front and watched the rioters fight the police before finally leaving some time after 5:00 pm.

Later that evening, at 7:26 p.m., Miller answered tweet from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, saying, “Kill the AOC.” Prosecutors said Miller continued to express his desire to “start the killings”, bragged about the riot, and said he wanted to publicly identify the police officer who shot Ashley Babbitt and “put a pretty rope around his neck.”

When he was arrested on January 20, 2021, Miller was wearing a shirt with a picture of former President Donald Trump and the words, “I was there, Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021.”
