Waze adds feature for EV drivers to find compatible charging stations

Waze, a navigation app owned by Google, hopes to make it easier for EV drivers to find a charging station.

Company announced on the blog On Tuesday, users will now be able to enter their electric vehicle (EV) and connect it to the Waze app to find suitable charging stations along their route.

“Information about charging stations is often inconsistent, outdated or unreliable, which poses a major problem for EV drivers who may move to a charging station only to find they cannot find or use it,” the company said in a statement. “By adding up-to-date EV charging information to the Waze map, it will be even easier to charge your car and get help in determining where or when you will meet the next station.”

Waze said the EV data will be verified and updated in real time by community map editors to ensure accuracy.

Waze said the feature will be available starting this week and will roll out globally “in the coming weeks.”

But the report posted on Wednesday by Electrok noted that the EV charger search feature still showed nearby gas stations instead of single-user chargers. In response, a Waze spokesperson told the publication that the electric vehicle feature “will be available to all users in the US by mid-April.”

The representative added that this feature is already available in Albania, Bosnia, Brazil, Chile, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, New Zealand, Poland, San Marino, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia and Sweden.

The Google Maps app also shows charging stations for EV drivers along their route. Last year, tech giant announced a feature that allows users to search for “electric vehicle charging stations” and select a “fast charge” filter, showing stations with chargers of 50 kW or higher, as well as stations offering certain types of plugs.

In February, Google also introduced new Maps features for EV drivers with vehicles that there is a built-in googleincluding from manufacturers such as Polestar, Volvo, GMC, Honda, Renault and Cadillac.
