San Jose street vendors on edge after attacks

Many street vendors in San Jose are on their toes after two attacks were reported in five days.

Both attacks on vendors were caught on camera and each incident went viral on social media. Officials have said the two attacks are unrelated.

Sellers who spoke to NBC Bay Area on Monday said they were concerned, but added that they really have no choice but to keep working.

Police are still looking for a suspect in Thursday’s incident when a man attacked a hot dog vendor and left him unconscious after a concert at the SAP Center.

Carlos Renkoco told sister station NBC Bay Area Telemundo 48 that he regained consciousness after paramedics arrived. The attacker was allegedly upset that he had made a large purchase and wanted a free hot dog as part of the deal.

Police said on Saturday, salesman Carlos Sanchez was attacked by an auto parts store owner who ordered him to leave the area outside the business on the Old Bayshore Highway.

Sanchez said the suspect hit his barbecue grill with a baseball bat and then hit him.

Police have arrested 43-year-old Kenny Ho, who is now charged with assault with a deadly weapon and attempted car theft.

“It’s incredibly disturbing,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said of the attacks.

Mahan promises more protection for street vendors.

“We will do our best to increase the presence of patrols and monitor this closely,” Mahan said. “We want to keep our street vendors safe.”

Mahan encourages vendors to report any issues to his office at [email protected].
