Queens man shot dead by NYPD was an ex-con on parole

The man shot by NYPD officers in Queens Thursday was an ex-con who died of his injuries, police said Friday.

Quayshawn Samuel, 31, was with two other men in the lobby of a building on Beach 56th St. near Beach Channel Drive in Edgemere when cops walked in looking into a tip about drug slinging, authorities said.

Samuel and one of the men took off, while the other was nabbed with crack on the spot, cops said.

When one of the officers caught up with Samuel, who had a loaded 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, the pair became locked in a “violent struggle for at least 20 seconds,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

This is the loaded 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun the NYPD said was being carried by a man they shot and killed.

During the scuffle, the cop shot Samuel twice, police said. The ex-con’s unused gun was found on the ground beside him, authorities said.

Samuel, who lived in the neighborhood, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he died, police said.

The police officer who shot Samuel lost his body worn camera, because it fell off during the chase and then someone stole it, an NYPD official said. The cop has been on the job for three years.

Surveillance cameras in the area captured the struggle between Samuel and the officer, police said.

Samuel was convicted of attempted murder in 2014, for a 2012 shooting, and served almost 8 years in state prison, police said. He was released in May and was on parole until June 2023.

He was also arrested for attempted murder for a shooting in 2009.

The third man who was in the lobby with Samuel is still at large.
