New Orleans Warns ‘Don’t Get in Your Car’ as Car Theft Rate Reaches Shocking 165%

The number of car thefts in the Big Easy has skyrocketed over the past three years, more than doubling from pre-COVID-19 levels, according to city data.

In the past few years, New Orleans has experienced an increase in violent crime. It had the most homicides per capita of any major U.S. city in September, earning it the title of national homicide capital before losing the seat by the end of the year. The city’s homicide rate has doubled since 2019, according to the New Orleans City Council’s Crime Dashboard.

And the number of car thefts has skyrocketed, up 165% over a three-year period, the dashboard shows. There were 273 incidents last year compared to 103 in 2019.

Some New Orleans residents have taken precautions to avoid car theft during the citywide surge.

“You’re trying to park near your house or where you’re going,” New Orleans’ Kelly told Fox News. “You don’t sit in your car and play on your phone.”

Meanwhile, car thefts have also skyrocketed in recent years in cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington DC and Minneapolis. The City of Brotherly Love has not lived up to its name, with car thefts up 494% since 2019, surpassing 1,300 in 2022, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.
