McCall targets China and Afghan withdrawal as top oversight priorities: ‘I have subpoena power’

EXCLUSIVE: House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCall vows to stop technology exports to China and hold the Biden administration accountable for the chaotic and deadly withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in 2021 as his committee’s top priorities.

McCall, Texas, said one of the first actions he plans to take is to request to view a classified dissenters telegram sent by US State Department officials warning of a deteriorating security situation and calling for an immediate evacuation of allies.

“I want to see a dissenting telegram from the embassy. Twenty-three employees took the very extraordinary step of actually objecting to the policies of the President of the United States or the administration,” McCall told Fox News Digital. “I would like to see what they said. So far, they will not submit this document. It makes me wonder if they’re going to show me the cooperative documents that you know as a federal attorney what you’re trying to hide?”

“I have the right to subpoena. I leave it until it’s needed. But I’m willing to do it to get those questions answered,” McCall said. He plans to investigate the reasons behind the suicide bomber to leave Bagram and kill 13 US troops, the reason Bagram Airport was handed over to the Taliban, and other issues.

“So many mistakes have been made,” he said, noting that his experience as a former federal prosecutor will help him discover facts and evidence. He said the evidence could lead him to some administration officials who “may have acted inappropriately.”

While accountability in Afghanistan is imperative, McCall told Fox News Digital that his top priority is preventing the US from becoming dependent on China, which threatens national security.

“I think my number one [priority] is to stop the export of technology to China, which they then use to install their most advanced weapons systems, which they are now turning against the United States,” he said.

McCall said one example is a hypersonic missile developed by China “based on American technology” that has landed accurately and can carry a nuclear warhead.

“For God’s sake, they are stealing enough intellectual property from us. We don’t need to sell it to them,” he said.

“And we have to pull the supply chain, like I did with my chip bill. Semiconductor chip manufacturing in the United States, not Taiwan, is vulnerable to a takeover by China,” McCall told Fox News Digital. “We are also looking at rare earth minerals and medical products, pulling supply chains from there. As you know, Taiwan produces 90% of advanced semiconductor chips.”

“We don’t want to depend on China anymore, and we don’t want to depend on their supply chain. And we don’t fucking want to sell them technology that they will use in their advanced weapons systems. turn back as a threat to the United States,” he said.

McCall spoke just days after the Chinese Air Force shot down a reconnaissance balloon.

The chairman called the observation mission a “test” for President Biden by President Xi Jinping, which the US failed.

“I would argue that in Chairman Xi’s opinion, America or this president failed this test by not destroying it in US airspace, but rather by waiting until it crosses the United States over very important facilities, collecting data, and then shooting it down. he said. “I’m glad we finally did it, but it was too late. And it raises questions about what was being transmitted back to China at the time.”

McCall says his committee is investigating the incident and what happens when the balloon is retrieved.

“The American people have a right to know when a foreign adversary sends air assets at such a low altitude over our country to the United States, which can collect data. They have a right to know the truth.”
