‘Insane’ man won’t stop harassing and threatening family, so fearless father makes him pay: police

A young father in Washington shot and killed a man who was reported to have been “erratic” and “threatened” his child on Sunday afternoon.

The incident took place at a dog park in Yakima City after the defender made several attempts to defuse the situation, according to The Yakima Herald.

According to a police press release, this is a classic case of a well-meaning person being forced to use a weapon to protect their own or someone else’s life from someone who could cause serious harm.

After doing his best to avoid a bad situation, the father used his legal firearm to keep himself and his child safe.

The Yakima Police Department said in a statement that the 28-year-old father was walking at Randall’s dog park when he met Daniel Ortega, 22.

The department said “several people” called 911 to report that Ortega “arrived at the Randall Park dog park acting erratically.”

“The promiscuous individual attempted to endanger the life of a young child with his words and actions, after which the father of the child protected his child from the threat,” Yakima police said.

“The father of the child gave verbal commands to the disordered subject to leave the family alone, while he himself tried to leave the park,” the police added. “After attempts to verbally de-escalate the incident failed, the child’s father, a 28-year-old Yakima man, discharged his legal firearm in defense of himself and his child.”

Is this father a hero?

Ortega died at the scene, and police said the father’s account of the incident was corroborated by witnesses.

“Multiple interrogations of the parties involved and witnesses confirmed what was believed to have happened,” the police said. “After consultation with the Yakima County Attorney, the man who used the firearm in this incident was released after cooperating with detectives.”

Ultimately, the prosecutor will decide whether the father, whose identity has not been released, is charged with a crime. Judging from the details offered, this man did his best to leave.

He fired his weapon only after it became obvious that it was absolutely necessary.

While the death of a 22-year-old whose life was unceremoniously cut short in a dog park is not worth celebrating, the average citizen and parent who chooses to protect their child from potential danger is to be commended.

A father’s job is always to protect his family.

The young man in this case was guided by common sense when he decided to buy a weapon and learn how to use it. As far as we know, he acted honestly and within the framework of his constitutional rights.

Our country’s problems with violent crime are out of control, and the root cause of this needs to be interpreted.

But one cold and harsh reality is this: Citizens can often choose whether they themselves will be the first to react — even in states run mostly by Democrats.
