‘Hazmat killer’ walks out of NYPD precinct hours after being arrested for killing deli worker

A man accused of killing an Upper East Side deli worker wearing a HAZMAT suit during a string of robberies was escorted out of Precinct 19 on Thursday night, hours after his arrest.

Kymond L. Cyrus, 39, remained silent as reporters bombarded him with questions as detectives escorted him to the back of a police car with his hands and feet shackled.

Cyrus is accused of killing a 67-year-old Daona Gourmet Deli employee at 81st Street and Third Avenue during a botched robbery last Friday night, police said.

He was also wanted for three other armed robberies at the city’s grocery stores and wine cellars over the course of 10 days.

He was eventually arrested after police received a tip on Sunday when a citizen called and claimed to have seen him in a Bronx wine cellar near Croton Park and said the man left on a scooter.

Police had difficulty identifying the suspect as he was wearing a mask and full-body white Tyvek suit at the time of the robbery.

Police obtained surveillance footage from the alley at 5:00 pm Crotona Park East showing a man on a scooter wearing a Tyvek suit leaving just over an hour before the March 3 murder in Manhattan.

The video then shows the man returning without protective gear about 20 minutes after a second robbery later that night in the Bronx, detective chief James Essig told reporters at a press conference Thursday morning.

Police identified the suspect as Cyrus after reviewing the footage.

Cyrus previously served a two-year sentence in state prison in June 2003 after he was found guilty of second-degree assault in Manhattan, according to state records.

He was released on parole in July 2005 and released from parole in March 2006.
