Gavin Newsom returns to California and claims he was at work ‘today’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) returned to the state Sunday after an unexplained absence during the state of emergency and later shared a photo of him allegedly working during the day “today.”

Problem: Both the time stamp on the image and the time on Newsom’s own watch suggest the photo was taken in the evening, meaning Newsom did not meet with emergency officials until late in the day.

On Sunday, Breitbart News reported, the governor had been absent from an undisclosed location since at least Thursday, the day after he belatedly declared a state of emergency due to a blizzard that had begun a week earlier.

While Newsom was away, desperate residents remained in the mountain villages, many running out of food, fuel and medicine. In some places, the promised aid from the California National Guard has yet to arrive.

At 11:26 a.m. Sunday, Newsom’s office issued an eight-word press release announcing the governor had returned to the state. The headline was about Newsom’s “schedule” but did not go into detail about his plans.

Late Sunday night, his office issued another press release describing Newsom’s meetings “today” with state emergency officials. His office also shared an image of Newsom as he met with those officials.

The image, retweeted by Newsom himself, claimed he met with officials “today” but was posted at 8:35 p.m. PT. Upon closer examination, Newsom’s watch showed that the meeting time was around 6:00 pm.

Newsom often attacks Republican governors like Florida’s Ron DeSantis, but DeSantis has dealt with recent natural disasters by declaring a state of emergency. before the storm came, and left in the state to lead the effort.
