Warriors Guard Payton II out of action for at least a month

Newly acquired Golden State guard Gary Payton II will be out for at least a month as he fully recovers from off-season surgery for a core injury, and Warriors general manager Bob Myers awaits an NBA decision on whether the Trail Blazers withheld anything about the case. Payton’s health before the exchange.

“What do I want? Everything the NBA says is fair, whatever it is,” Myers said Monday of receiving any potential compensation from Portland. “I just want a fair outcome. I don’t know what it is.” cost, I don’t know how long.

Myers is hopeful the quarterback can return before the playoffs. Payton is listed in the injury report with right adductor muscle tenderness radiating from the abdomen, and there were no further details on whether this meant the high-flying Payton’s right leg was also compromised.

“Gary won’t be home. We’re going to evaluate it in a month. We’re sure he’s not ready to play right now,” Myers said.

Myers did not address any concerns the Warriors had with the way Portland handled the deal or whether they shared any details about Payton’s health, citing legal restrictions and medical confidentiality. Golden State did express concern about this process in the league before deciding Sunday for a four-team trade that sent center James Wiseman to the Pistons.

Myers said the team had considered all options, including possibly canceling the deal entirely.

“We had time to make a decision, so we just thought about it more,” Myers said. “Perhaps by Saturday night we had a sense of the direction we were heading in.”

While the defending champions were hoping for Payton to play immediately, Myers still believes in a long-term transition. Payton signed a three-year, $28 million contract with the Trail Blazers.

“We still think it’s useful. We just have to wait until he recovers,” Myers said.

Payton, 30, played against Golden State in Wednesday night’s win at Portland before returning to his former team a day later before the trade deadline. Payton is averaging 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists over 15 games.

“As for Gary, what he does for us, I think you all know, you’ve seen what he does for us,” Myers said.

Myers added that it was difficult to part ways with Wiseman, the 2020 second overall out of Memphis, who missed all of last season while recovering from right knee surgery he underwent at the end of his rookie season. The Warriors didn’t expect him to make an impact this season if they kept him and turned down the trade — and Myers said he’ll be rooting for Wiseman’s success and opportunities in Detroit.

“He’s a great guy and did everything we asked him to do, on time, worked hard, had a great attitude, whether he played or not, the G-League and so on,” Myers said. “So it wasn’t easy to move someone that we like so much as a person. I know it’s a business.”
