Florida man who broke into gas station, stole dog food and smoked caught after leaving debit card: Police

A Florida man is under arrest after police said he stole money from a gas station and left his debit card with his name at the crime scene.

According to Fox 35 Orlando, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to an alarm at a gas station early Sunday morning in Palm Coast, Fla., and found that the front door of the business was unlocked.

After a search of the gas station, the police found a debit card with the name Lanz Kurz lying on a counter near the cash register.

CCTV footage shows the man entering the store from behind and stealing several items before opening the front door and exiting.

Police say they identified Kurtz, 21, from a car fire earlier in the night, and they found him in a disabled car, where he admitted to breaking into the premises and taking the items.

“So I can come back later and pay for it,” Kurtz told police when asked why he forgot his debit card. “Just so they know my name, you know? Just in case they take me away. I didn’t mean to steal anything. You know it’s illegal. I don’t know if they teach you guys that.”

Kurtz was arrested and charged with armed robbery of a home/structure and petty theft and released on $10,000 bail.

“He must have really wanted these items to break into the closed convenience store to get them,” Sheriff Rick Staley said. “Abandoning a debit card does not exempt you from theft or burglary.”

A spokesman for the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office told Fox News Digital that Kurtz is suspected of stealing dog food, antifreeze, cigarillos and an electronic tobacco device.
