Fires kill man in Bronx, woman in Brooklyn in span of 13 minutes

Fires that broke out less than 15 minutes apart killed man in the Bronx and a woman in Brooklyn, police said Wednesday.

The first blaze ignited about 10:09 p.m. Tuesday in two-story brick rowhouse on Rochester Ave. near Lincoln Place in Crown Heights.

After firefighters doused the blaze, first responders found a 54-year-old woman unconscious in the home. Medics rushed her to Brookdale University Hospital but she could not be saved. Her name was not immediately released.

About 10:22 p.m., a fire erupted in an apartment building on Rochambeau Ave. near E. 212th St. in Norwood, a block away from Woodlawn Cemetery. First responders found the severely burned body of 76-year-old resident Milton Barnes after firefighters put out the blaze.

FDNY marshals are working to determine the cause of both fires and the city medical examiner will conduct autopsies to determine the exact cause of death of each victim.
