Dallas police and PETA are trying to identify the man seen in the video leaving the dog on Dowdy Ferry Road.

DALLAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) – Officials are asking the public for help in identifying a man who was seen in a video abandoning a dog on the side of a south Dallas road Wednesday night.

A video released by the Dowdy Ferry Animal Transportation Commission shows a light-skinned, dark-haired man driving a white SUV pulling onto the side of Dowdy Ferry Road and opening his trunk. The German Shepherd is then seen jumping out of the car, unaware of the circumstances.

DPD and PETA are trying to identify the man seen in the video abandoning the dog on Dowdy Ferry Road.

The screams of a woman can be heard in the background, as well as a neighbor who noticed the ongoing dump. The man then returned to his car and drove away, leaving the dog to chase him.

The dog was later captured and taken to the Dallas Animal Service; However, residents of this part of the city say they see it too often, and that in most cases the dogs are not so lucky.

“It happens all the time. We had seven dogs thrown out in seven days, just like two weeks ago,” said Jeremy Boss, president of the Dowdy Animal Transportation Commission.

In fact, Boss says, over the past ten years the non-profit has been working to stop these crimes, they’ve seen thousands of dog dumps.

“Each of my members [the] The Dowdy Ferry Animal Commission has broken down at least once, he said. “Sometimes we lose sensitivity, and sometimes we break down.”

Currently, the man has not been caught and the Dallas Police Department is still looking for leads. The Organization for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is also offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to his arrest.

In a press release sent out Friday, PETA said the neighbors who rescued the dog said his collar “was so tight you could barely see it” and that other than a minor leg injury, he was in good health.

“Don’t let this moment go and forget what you saw. Because I guarantee there will be more dogs and more dogs will be abandoned,” Boss said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the DPD Animal Cruelty Team at 469-504-3394.
