Dangerous goods train derails in northwest Arizona

A hazardous materials train derailed in northern Arizona late Wednesday night, local officials said.

The Mojave County Sheriff’s Office said the train derailed at the Topok Bridge near Interstate 40, but there was no sign that potentially hazardous chemicals had spilled.

Authorities have yet to report any casualties or deaths from the derailment.

The accident happened just north of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, near the California border. Its cause is also unknown at this time.

The derailment is the latest in an unrelated series of derailments across the country, including one of the nation’s worst derailments in East Palestine, Ohio.

The Norfolk Southern derailment in Ohio, which occurred on February 3, resulted in air and water pollution and affected nearby residents and wildlife. Railway company officials continue to monitor the cleanup process closely and said in a statement Monday that they are working on “long-term funds for East Palestine.”

“Every day since the crash, our goal has been to make things right for the people of East Palestine and nearby communities,” the company said. “Every day, we are making progress to safely and thoroughly clean up the site, provide financial assistance to affected residents and businesses, and invest to help East Palestine and its surrounding communities thrive.”

It added: “Many residents are worried about what they will do if the health effects of the crash are discovered in a few years. We appreciate Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s leadership and advocacy on this matter. To date, environmental monitoring continues to show the state of the air and drinking water is safe. To provide an additional layer of assurance, we are committed to a solution that eliminates long-term health risks through the establishment of a long-term medical compensation fund.”

The state of Ohio announced it was suing Norfolk Southern for what it calls a “totally preventable” derailment, which was “a direct result of Norfolk Southern’s practice of putting its profits ahead of the health, safety and welfare of the communities in which Norfolk Southern operates.”
