Black District Attorney Democrat Tells Truth About Crime, But Progressives Don’t Listen

David Soares is the District Attorney for Albany County, New York, where politics is paramount, where facts rarely matter, and apostasy is unacceptable.

So it’s no surprise that Democrat Soares, a vocal opposition figure, is on the outside in the Democrat-dominated capital.

Soares is black, which historically has not been an advantage in his county’s political environment, dominated by cars and Irish Catholics.

He was elected district attorney in 2005 with the backing of the malware destroyer George Soros, much to the dismay of local safe street advocates.

But Soares takes his oath seriously. He is certainly not Alvin Bragg, a Soros acolyte so engrossed in far-left, racial ideology that he might as well be a local public defender.

Indeed, Soares was one of the first to warn against the infamous “reforms” of criminal justice in 2019.

It seemed obvious at the time that easing up on violent criminals would lead to an increase in violent crime, but it took courage to say so, and Soares seems to have a lot of courage.

Now he’s demanding “reform” reforms, and his heresy – he’s a black progressive Democrat convincingly arguing that innocent black New Yorkers are the prime victims of 2019’s change – is noted. Especially from the black progressive Democrats who now head the State Legislature, who apparently got fed up with his impudence.

Earlier this month, during a late Sunday night phone call, the district attorney was denied the right to testify against the 2019 “reforms” in the joint legislative committee.

At least that’s what almost everyone says except the senator, who told Albany columnist Chris Churchill over the weekend that Soares was never invited to speak at all. “There is absolutely no truth to this statement,” Flack said.

May be. But if that’s the case, then why call Soares on the weekend to say he’s not really welcome? What is true is that Soares prepared testimony for the event, including this scathing message to legislators:

“Perhaps you have not heard this harsh truth,” he wrote. “These reforms have had the most devastating impact on black and brown communities. If you look honestly at the data – the rise in crime, the number of victims of these crimes, and the location of the most violent crimes – the connection is quite clear.”

This also applies to the city of Albany, where there were 19 murders last year, mostly in marginal areas, and virtually all of the victims were black. (Adjusting for population differences, that’s the equivalent of 1,700 murders in New York.)

And, of course, this is true of Gotham, where Hannah Meyers of the Manhattan Institute reports not only a dramatic increase in homicides since the “reforms” but an equally alarming proportional change in casualties.

Alvin Bragg
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has been heavily criticized for the high rate of recidivism in the city.
Paul Martinka

“In 2017, 55.7 percent of the 292 homicide victims in the city were black,” she says, “an alarming number for a city where blacks make up only about one-fifth. By 2021, more than 66 percent of the 488 murder victims were black.”

Of course, there’s more to New York’s crime spree than homicides. And the victims come in all colors and from all walks of life; they include the targets of subway robberies, retailers involved in an ongoing epidemic of shoplifting, elderly people just strolling around, and even the MTA, which now loses more than $250 million a year due to fare violators.

To be sure, weak prosecution is also a factor. The Manhattan D.A. Bragg is the epitome of hardheaded, ideologically driven law enforcement, and it shows.

But ultimately the blame lies with Albany, where the very presence of David Soares is a reproach to ideologues that perpetuates the crisis. Of course, it is easy to exclude him from a conversation that does not change one main fact.

Which is the blood of the innocent in ever-increasing quantities, in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assembly speaker Carl Histie, and even Governor Hochul herself. This is the message of David Soares, now a man speaking deep truths to a corrupt government – and paying the price for apostasy.
