Accused of murdering police officer Randy “Popper” Jones has been charged with the first-degree murder of NYPD officer Adid Fayaz.

Dozens of police officers filled a Brooklyn courtroom to catch a glimpse of accused murderer Randy “Popper” Jones on Tuesday after he was charged by a grand jury with the murder of NYPD officer Adid Fayaz.

Jones, 38, stood silently in front of Brooklyn Superior Court Judge Danny Cheung in an orange prison jumpsuit and gray skullcap, and his appearance lasted about three minutes.

Court officials moved the trial to a larger courtroom to accommodate approximately 60 uniformed officers, who sat six abreast on gallery seats and lined the back wall.

Randy "Popper" Jones is escorted from the 75th NYPD Precinct in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, after he was charged with the murder of Officer Adid Fayaz.

Members of the Jones family, including several young children, filled the row, blowing kisses and shouting “Love you!” and “Bye, Dad!” as he left the courtroom. They declined to comment after the trial.

Jones remains in custody without bail on charges of killing Fayaz during a botched February 4 car sale robbery. The prosecution also charges Jones with a similar robbery on January 13th.

Fayaz and his brother-in-law met with Jones on Ruby Street in East New York to buy a Honda Pilot advertised on Facebook Marketplace for $24,000, prosecutors allege.

They brought cash for the purchase, but left it in Fayaz’s car.

Jones led the couple into an alley before asking, “Do you guys have a gun?” then, according to the police, they blocked Fayaz’s head.

He held a gun to the officer’s head and demanded money, but the young cop broke free when Jones pointed his gun at his son-in-law, police said.

Jones then shot Fayaz in the head and fled, prosecutors said. Fayaz’s son-in-law grabbed the fallen officer’s gun and began firing, firing six bullets, while Jones returned fire with five of his own rounds, prosecutors said. According to the district attorney, one of the bullets hit the car, and Jones later tried to cover the bullet hole with a piece of tape.

Fayaz, 26, died three days later.

The January 13 robbery followed a similar pattern, but ended without bloodshed. Jones met with another man at the same location after posting a Honda Odyssey for sale on Facebook Marketplace, prosecutors allege.

According to the district attorney, he pointed a gun at the buyer and took $18,000.

More than 100 police officers also showed up for Jones’ hearing in Brooklyn Criminal Court last month when he was ordered to be held without bail.

“We are grateful for this first step towards justice. Now the process should move quickly and confidently towards the right verdict,” Patrick Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association, said on Tuesday. “This is a ruthless criminal who not only preys on defenseless New Yorkers – he killed an armed and trained NYC cop without hesitation. He must never again see outside the prison walls.”

Police officers enter a courtroom in Brooklyn Superior Court on charges of alleged murderer of police officer Randy "Popper" Jones on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.

Jones could face life in prison without parole if found guilty of first-degree murder, the main charge against him.

“The death of Police Officer Adid Fayaz is a terrible and tragic loss to his family, friends, colleagues in the NYPD and the community that he selflessly served,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. “My thoughts are with all who mourn his loss and my office will actively seek justice on his behalf.”

Chun delayed the case until May 17 after defense attorney Michael Rooney of the Legal Aid Society demanded time to review the grand jury minutes before making any motions.

Rooney declined to comment on Tuesday.
