A 13-year-old boy is accused of stabbing a Coney Island teenager for interfering in a fight between girls.

Police said on Monday that a 13-year-old boy was charged with stabbing a Coney Island teenager to death for intervening in a fight between girls.

Police said the young suspect turned himself in, along with his mother, to detectives at the Brooklyn 60th precinct on Sunday. Two other teenagers, aged 14 and 15, also turned themselves in and were charged with assault and gang assault.

The NYPD is not releasing the names of the suspects because they are minors.

Police said the three boys collided with Nyheem Wright on the afternoon of January 20 in the Rite Aid parking lot on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island.

Nyheem, described by City Education Department Chancellor David Banks as a “joyful leader”, was beaten and stabbed in the upper body. Medics took him in critical condition to the Maimonides Medical Center, where he died the next day. The murder was the latest act of senseless violence against teenagers in the city.

“Our city is suffering because of these losses,” Banks announced this on Twitter.. “This week, we will support students and schools affected by violence as they grieve, and we will work with all schools to help young people move away from violence.”

Police officials blamed the youth violence on gangs and ridicule on social media.

Police investigate a stabbing at Mermaid Avenue and W. 30th Street in Coney Island January 20.

But Naihim, a student at K728 Liberation Diploma Plus High School, about a mile from the scene, was killed because he came to the aid of a girl he knew, his family said at the time.

“He’s not the type to get in trouble, [he’s] pretty shy,” said his cousin Miriam Wright. “I never saw him get angry or anything like that. I’m still trying to digest it.”

Police on Monday confirmed that Nayhim had intervened in a fight between the girls the day before he was stabbed to death.
