9-year-old girl dies after SUV hits her on Queens Street; “Terrible, just terrible”

A 9-year-old girl died when an SUV hit her on a street in Queens on Friday night, police said.

The Ford Explorer was driving east on Newtown Road. in Astoria when he hit a 9-year-old girl near 45th Street in Astoria around 5:50 p.m., police said.

“I heard a scream. I went down, and the child was lying in the middle of the street, bleeding, ”said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous.

“Her mother stopped crying. It was terrible, just terrible. Poor thing.

A 46-year-old woman driving a Ford Explorer immediately stopped the vehicle, said a witness who called 911.

“It was an accident,” a passenger in the car said at the scene. We didn’t see them.

At the time of the accident, the driver was traveling with his son and two other passengers.

Medics took the girl to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
