‘Yellowstone’ creator Taylor Sheridan to film scenes for new series in Waxahachie

WAXAHACHEE, TX (CBSDFW.COM) Waxahachie City Council on Wednesday gave the necessary permits to allow the Yellowstone creator to film scenes for a new show in February.

Taylor Sheridan’s new show, 1883: Bass Reeves, will be filming at the Ellis County Courthouse on February 13 and 14. The city plans to close the parking lot around the courthouse and, intermittently, some downtown streets during filming. Businesses affected by the closure have already been notified.

The show, originally announced in September 2021, will focus on the story of his namesake, who was one of the first black US Marshals in the American West.

Reeves, played by Daniel Oyelowo, grew up in Grayson County after his master moved there from Arkansas and may have fought in the Civil War. He was appointed Deputy U.S. Marshal in 1875 as Judge for the Western District of Arkansas and became responsible for capturing criminals in the 75,000-square-mile area that mostly covered present-day Oklahoma and Arkansas.

As a Deputy U.S. Marshal, Reeves is known to have killed at least 14 criminals and captured more than 3,000 people, including his own son, during his service. He retired in 1907 and became a police officer in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He is sometimes cited as the inspiration for the television series The Lone Ranger, although historians disagree.

Sheridan himself has ties to North Texas, growing up in Cranfills Gap in Bosque County. It’s also not his first shoot in the area. Crews filmed scenes for Yellowstone on Venus last November, and the 1883 prequel series was filmed in Fort Worth.
