Where in the world has there never been snow?

Most of us assume that countries with sunny beaches and deserts have never seen snow in modern history, but you might be surprised to learn that a tropical island saw snow later than the Antarctic region.

Here is a list of some places around the globe where snow has not been seen.

Dry Valleys, Antarctica:

While the majority Antarctica covered in ice and snow, the Dry Valleys are a stark contrast to this.

Researchers call this area the polar desert, where the average year-round temperature is close to zero. The mercury column has dropped to 90 degrees below zero, holding very little of the moisture needed for snow.

So if precipitation falls, it will most likely be in the form of snow. But the mile-high Transantarctic Mountains guard three valleys, providing rain shadow, according to a study published Cambridge University Press.

While 90 below air doesn’t hold much moisture, NOAA states that snow is rare, but not impossible below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Any moisture from the ocean or the East Antarctic ice sheet would have to pass through the peaks. The atmosphere generally cools with height, and colder air can hold less moisture than warmer air. What little water vapor is contained in the atmosphere is squeezed out over mountain peaks.

HOW THE MOUNTAINS CAN HOLD THE RAIN

Glaciers fill in several valleys in the ranges. As the wind blows from the windward side of the mountains and moisture condenses, the air becomes drier. As gravity takes over, the air parcel descends and accelerates downwind.

Physics is the same for warm and strong California Santa Ana winds. Dry Valley winds can reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.

WHAT IS THE SANTA ANA WINDS?

Dry air quickly evaporates any snow or rain in the air. In many cases snow sublimates during severe drought.
