WATCH: SUV crashes into Dallas restaurant, injuring five

Dallas police said the driver who crashed into the restaurant, injuring five people, was under the influence of alcohol.

Surveillance video shows the SUV crashing into the Italian restaurant Speranza on Preston Road in the Far North of Dallas.

Police identified the driver as 64-year-old Ian Bennett.

She is charged with manslaughter while intoxicated and has a previous conviction for drunk driving.

At least one in five affected clients is still in the hospital with a concussion, but all survived.

The owner of the restaurant said that during the detention of the driver, the employees recognized her.

When you enter the Italian restaurant Speranza, you become part of the family.

“This is our family wall where we have our clients and family,” said Speranza Italian restaurant owner Nicole Mala. “Now it has been taken down, but we hope to put it back together.”

But on Friday the room was quiet. Food and shards of glass lay on the ground.

“It’s as if we often have guests in our house,” Mala added.

During lunch on Thursday, the feeling of security was deprived.

“It looked like a bomb went off here. This lady just swept through our building and hit all the visitors who were sitting there. I was here. My parents were here,” Mala recalls.

Surveillance video shows the SUV crashing into the front windows, throwing customers to the ground.

The driver then reversed the way she entered.

Dallas police said at least five people were injured.

“From the way she approached them, I didn’t know if anyone would survive,” Mala said. “And I’m so grateful that they all did it.”

In the video you can see instant chaos.

People immediately called 911 and some ran outside to try to stop the driver.

The rest provided assistance to affected clients.

“My mom is holding a woman’s head because she can’t move. It was like a movie,” Mala said.

Dallas police identified the driver as 64-year-old Jen Bennett.

Investigators said Bennett was under the influence of alcohol and was incarcerated in the Dallas County Jail for assault while intoxicated.

Video from outside shows Bennett’s SUV pulling into a parking lot but then quickly driving into a restaurant and then backing up.

Mala said her staff recognized Bennett as a regular at the Speranza.

“She is our client. She came here to eat,” Mala said. “She came in, just from the wrong side.”

On Friday evening, boards went up in the street.

Inside, Mala showed FOX 4 where Speranza’s dream began, with her father.

Now she and her sister help run several restaurants.

It was a concept created by her family and centered around family. She is grateful that the whole family is now recovering.

“We treat our clients like family,” Mala said.

According to online records, Bennett was convicted of driving under the influence eight years ago in Denton County.

As for Speranza, it is now closed indefinitely, although they will try to take it out as soon as possible.
