Walmart employee’s heroic actions in Indiana saved lives, police say

Indiana police said on Friday that heroic actions taken by a Walmart employee and law enforcement officials prevented the gunman who shot and wounded an employee from continuing to cause harm.

Ronald Ray Mosley II, a 25-year-old former store employee, entered the store’s break room where employees were meeting late Thursday night and shot a woman in the face with a 9mm pistol.

According to the Evansville Police Department, she was the only victim.

A male employee who was also targeted by Mosley ran out of the room and Mosley followed him. Another employee saw Mosley flee the room and called 911 before taking the victim to another room, locking the door and turning off the lights before Mosley returned to look for the injured woman.

Sergeant Anna Gray said the officers were in the building four minutes after the 911 call.

At the time, there were about 40 Walmart employees and 40 customers in the store.

Mosley was shot dead by the officers.

Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin called the 911 caller a hero and praised her for her bravery.

“I have no doubt that he was going to come back to finish what he started, and today we would probably have a dead victim instead of a living one,” he said during a press conference.

The woman she helped was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital and was in a stable condition, Gray said.

According to Bolin, the shooter left a suicide note and was “absolutely going to die.”

Gray said investigators did not yet know when Mosley acquired the gun or how many shots he fired.

Mosley was fired from the store after he was charged with four counts of battery on May 18, 2022, after he assaulted four colleagues.

A sworn statement filed in the case says that Mosley told authorities he was having trouble with people at work and had “lost control”.

Just hours before the shooting, Mosley showed up for a preliminary hearing. He pleaded guilty to battery charges and received mental health treatment through the courts.

Winston Lin, chief deputy prosecutor for the Vanderburgh County Attorney’s Office, said on Friday no legal action had been taken against Mosley.

“The entire Walmart family is appalled by the senseless violence that took place at our Evansville store, and at this time, our hearts go out to our partners,” the retail giant Fox News said in a statement. “As we learn more, we will do our best to support our like-minded people as they deal with this tragedy.”

“We are grateful to local first responders and will continue to work with law enforcement as they investigate,” Walmart added.
