Virginia murder suspect killed, lawmaker wounded in shootout

A murder suspect was fatally shot and a sheriff’s deputy was badly wounded Wednesday in a shootout at an intersection in Virginia, officials said.

Members of the US Marshals task force trying to serve an arrest warrant pursued the suspect as he stopped his vehicle at the junction of Big Bethel Road and Todds Lane, Hampton Police Chief Mark Talbot said at a news conference. According to him, the suspect came out and immediately opened fire on members of the task force, who returned fire.

According to Talbot, both the suspect and the member of the task force received several blows. According to him, both were taken to the hospital, where they pronounced the suspect dead.

Investigator Scott Chambers, who was shot twice, was in critical condition and was operated on Wednesday afternoon, according to Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan.

Talbot declined to name the suspect or say which murder case he was wanted in.

The Hampton Police Serious Crime Unit will investigate the shooting, Hampton Police spokesman Sgt. Ashley Jenrette said. Jenreth didn’t know if any of the members of the task force had body cameras, how many members fired their weapons, and what race the people involved were.
