The Western Heritage cattle drive in San Antonio brings back sights and sounds from the past.

The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo kicked off their livestock events with a parade and cattle drive on Saturday morning.

SAN ANTONIO. Livestock events for the 2023 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo kicked off Saturday morning with a Western Heritage Parade and cattle drive. Mounted deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office were in attendance, as were the Texas A&M Parson and Texas Heritage Riders mounted cavalry.

Kimble Cattle provided the iconic Texas Longhorn for the cattle drive event. Co-owner Scott Kimble told KENS 5 they’ve been working hard to bring in a herd of 200 cattle that will keep calm on the streets of San Antonio. Kimble worked for the event for at least seven years. He said the best part is being able to show his livestock to kids who have never been this close before.

“Most people have never seen a Longhorn. When we drove up, people were taking pictures in the trailer,” Kimble said. “Seeing the look on people’s faces when they’ve never seen cattle, never smelled a cow, never heard a cow… they’ll be within touching distance.”

Kimble said there were almost no motorized vehicles in the parade to make it as historically accurate as possible.

The A&M Parsons Texas Mounted Cavalry also participated in the event and brought cavalry soldiers, a covered wagon, and horse-drawn artillery. Parsons Cavalry Officer Chris Arrasmit said I was honored to be involved and showcase Texas history.

“This city was created and fought at the Battle of the Alamo. Looking back at all this military history and seeing these artillery pieces rolling through the city, it really shows what San Antonio was founded on,” Arrasmyth said.

Arrasmit told KENS 5 that he visited the Alamo every time he was in San Antonio.

“I grew up in Texas all my life, so it’s good to make this pilgrimage from time to time and come to see the history we’ve been fighting for. For me, it’s a sense of pride,” Arrasmit said.

San Antonio parent Monica Knolls has been to the parade several times and brings her young children with her. Knolls said it’s a great way to show your kids the history of Texas.

“San Antonio is full of great history, Texas history, I want my kids to be surrounded by it and really proud to be from San Antonio,” Knolls said. “I think it’s a great history lesson for kids and something they get to see every year.”

The main events of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo begin on February 9th. See the list of events here.
