Upper West Side vandal spray-painted over 60 cars
The red menace haunts motorists on the Upper West Side.
Dozens of cars parked on Riverside Drive in recent months have been vandalized with red paint on side doors and windows.
On February 7 alone, police reported that 65 cars with the same number plate had been hit between West 99th and West 110th Streets.
The Post counted 10 cars, including a pristine gray. Alfa Romeo Giulia – along Riverside Drive between West 116th and West 125th streets with the same unsolicited coloring.
Carol Foreman, 58, a photo artist, was angry at The Post that the windows and doors of her car on the passenger side were marked with a wavy red line just days after West Side Rag reported that police were looking into the spray paint binge.
“I don’t think anyone is going to or can do anything about it,” she said. “It’s incredibly tedious and expensive.”
Paint removal, which includes sanding and repainting, can cost more than $1,200, said local mechanic Bill Boynton, who has had five cars with graffiti delivered to his Boynton car dealership in the past three weeks.
“Someone is unhappy and they want other people to feel as unhappy as they are,” he said of the heartless vandals.
Police and local residents have said that Riverside Drive has been a hotbed of car crime in recent years, citing numerous thefts of catalytic converters and broken car windows.
“Parking is always a problem on Riverside — it’s not very well lit,” said Officer Sarah Frankel of the 24th Precinct.
The NYPD said they are currently investigating the vandalism.
