South Bay mail thefts may be linked to recent postal operator robberies

New CCTV video raises big concerns about how thieves access South Bay mail.

Neighbors in Sunnyvale report that thieves took mail several times before hitting mailboxes again over the weekend.

“It’s really scary that these people are doing something like this just a few steps from your house,” said Sunnyvale resident Zachary Lee.

Lee said that last weekend, thieves carried out the theft for the third time in weeks.

“You would go out to get your mail and see junk mail strewn across the ground,” Lee said. “And the thieves took the most valuable mail and left the doors wide open.”

Lee is concerned that thieves have stolen personal financial information, including W-2 forms, which could put him at risk of identity theft.

The United States Postal Inspector is currently investigating whether what happened in Sunnyvale is related to the December 30 armed robbery of a postal worker less than a mile from Sandia Avenue.

“One suspect had a gun and demanded keys from the carrier, who handed over the keys to the suspect who left the area,” said US Postal Inspector Jeff Fitch.

These lockpicks can open dozens and dozens of mailboxes in the same region, officials say.

Fitch reported that there has been an increase in robberies of mail carriers in order to obtain keys in the Bay Area. The postal inspector reports targeted incidents in Oakland, San Leandro, Berkeley and San Francisco.

The postal inspector said an investigation is underway following the theft of the key, and the post office is conducting a security assessment to determine whether locks should be changed on major bank mailboxes.

Lee said he was worried about another mail theft and was thinking about buying a mailbox.

“We’re trying to keep a close eye on and make sure we don’t have our identity stolen from us,” Lee said.
