Two robbery suspects arrested after standoff in southeast Portland

Two people were detained following a police search of the community of Hazelwood in southeast Portland on Wednesday afternoon, during which residents were advised to stay at home.

According to police, the incident began around 6:30 a.m. when officers were sent to rob a store in the 2100 Southeast District. There were no reports of injuries.

Police searched the area and found two suspects, a man and a woman, who matched the description of the robbery. The perpetrators fled in the vicinity when the police tried to approach them.

For hours Wednesday, police blocked off 96th Avenue SE to 101st Avenue SE, Lincoln Street SE to Caruthers Street SE as they searched for gunmen. Residents have been advised to lock their doors and windows and stay at home. Police have advised nearby schools to secure their perimeters but continue regular operations inside.

Police and members of the Crisis Negotiation Team and the Special Emergency Response Team ultimately focused their search on a residential building in the 2100 block of 96th Avenue Southeast Asia. Although several people responded to their call for the suspects to come out through the public address system and cooperate, the suspects did not. So the police got a warrant.

The criminals appeared shortly after 13:00 and were detained.

According to authorities, the apartment was emptied, no other people were found, and no one was hurt.

Leon D. Vaughn Jr., 29, of Portland, and Chelsea S. Gray, 25, of Lake Oswego, were identified as suspects by police. They were taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of second-degree robbery and first-degree theft.
