Tesla workers want to form a union at a plant in Buffalo, New York.

Workers at Tesla Inc in New York State said Tuesday they are launching a unionization campaign at their gigafactory in Buffalo, New York, setting the stage for the latest labor challenge for CEO Elon Musk.

In a letter to the electric vehicle manufacturer’s management, the employees announced their plan to organize as Workers United Upstate New York.

The union, if formed, would be a first for Tesla, which has so far managed to avoid unions at its US facilities, unlike other major automakers.

Musk has been vocal in the past about his opposition to unions and faced the wrath of the US National Labor Relations Board when they ordered him to delete a 2018 tweet that said employees would lose their stock options if they formed a union.

“We believe unionization will give us a voice in the workplace that we believe has been ignored so far,” the workers said in a press release on Tuesday. “We’re only asking for space in the car we helped build.”

The letter, first reported by Bloomberg News earlier in the day, quoted employees asking Tesla to respect their right to organize a union and called on the world’s most valuable automaker to sign the Electoral Fairness Principles.

The employees stated that the right to organize a union is a fundamental civil right, and these principles will not allow Tesla to threaten or retaliate against workers for organizing a union.

“We as employees deserve to be able to negotiate with our employers about fair labor, and I would like to see a lot of changes at Tesla for the benefit of employees,” Tesla employee Alexis Hai said in an interview. statement.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
