Search continues after 10 injured in drive-by shooting in Lakeland area

LAKELAND, Florida. Ten people were injured in a drive-by shooting in the central Florida area, police said.

Lakeland police chief Sam Taylor said during a press conference that two of the victims were critically injured on Monday afternoon, while the other eight victims’ wounds were not considered life-threatening. The victims were men between the ages of 20 and 35.

Lakeland is located about 30 miles (50 km) east of Tampa.

“I have worked here for 34 years and I can tell you that I have never worked at an event where so many people were shot at the same time,” Taylor said.

A crowd of people gathered on a residential street when a dark blue sedan drove by, slowing down but not stopping, police said. According to Taylor, four people opened fire from the windows of the sedan before the car sped away.

Police were looking for the vehicle and the shooters on Monday evening, officials said.

Taylor said investigators believe the shooting was targeted.

Police said marijuana was found at the scene of the shooting and investigators believe a drug sale took place.

Taylor described the area as “troubled” and said the area has received a lot of police attention in recent years.
