Report: Donald Trump special prosecutor subpoenas Mike Pence

On Thursday, Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the investigation into former President Donald Trump, reportedly subpoenaed former Vice President Mike Pence.

Attorney General Merrick Garland in November instructed Smith to determine whether Trump should face prosecution for the January 6 events or for his handling of White House documents since leaving office.

ABC News, which first reported that Pence had been subpoenaed, said it wasn’t immediately clear what information Smith wanted from Pence, but noted that the subpoena came after “months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence’s legal team.”

“The move will be seen as a major escalation of the Smith investigation into efforts by Trump and his allies to reverse the election results and suggests that the Smith investigation has moved into a more advanced stage,” ABC News explained.

As Breitbart News previously reported, Smith has a history of unsuccessful prosecutions against political leaders, including one against former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (right), which was later overturned by the US Supreme Court.

Last month, Trump criticized Smith, calling him a “Trump-hating mobster.”

Trump wrote:

The special “prosecutor” assigned to the “Trump case”, Jack Smith (?), is a Trump-hating thug whose wife is a serial and open Trump-hater, whose friends and other family members are even worse, and as a prosecutor in Europe, by according to Rick Grenell, imprisoned a high-ranking government official for being a Trump-positive person.

Neither Pence’s office nor Smith’s office responded to ABC News’s requests for comment.
