Pupil R.L. Turner becomes “immune” after taking a possible fentanyl pill

CARROLTON, TX (CBSNewsTexas.com) — RL Turner High School student is expected to recover after swallowing a pill on Friday and becoming “immune,” Carrollton-Farmers Branch County officials said.

In a notice to parents, the district said staff and emergency services “immediately took action and provided medical assistance” to the student.

They went on to say that after receiving Narcan — treatment for a known or suspected opioid overdose — the student became responsive and was taken to a local hospital, where he is expected to be discharged later on Friday.

The county did not say what the pill was, but after the death of three CFBISD students due to fentanyl, they shared the following advice:

  • Tell them that any pill they got from a friend, acquaintance, or bought online or on the street could be a fake pill containing fentanyl.
  • Make sure your child delivers all medicines, including over-the-counter medicines, to the school nurse for distribution. Students must not carry any medication with them to school or share it for any reason.
  • Contact your child’s nurse or counselor with any specific concerns or if you need additional resources unique to your family.

The overdose came two days after another man was arrested for drug trafficking. On Wednesday, 20-year-old Donovan Jude Andrews was arrested and charged with conspiracy to possess in order to distribute a controlled substance. He first appeared in court on Friday morning.

Early last month, Andrews allegedly commented on an Instagram post in which arrest Luis Navarrete, 21, and Magali Cano, 29. The couple has been publicly linked to at least ten juvenile overdoses in the county.

In a post under the username “deegetbandz_3x,” Andrews allegedly noted that Navarrete and Cano “brought all the attention” to law enforcement and “revealed that he was selling M/30 pills for $10 each,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Officials said he later shared an Instagram post announcing the death of three CFBISD students from an overdose with the caption “[expletive] they come get them.”

Jason Xavier Villanueva, 22, who allegedly supplied fentanyl pills to Navarrete and Cano, was also charged with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. He was arrested on February 14th.
