Fort Worth police say they have arrested two suspects in connection with Friday’s fatal shooting at Whataburger near RL Paschal High School. The search for a third suspect continues.

Fort Worth police said 17-year-old Daniel Reed was taken into custody on Saturday. He has been charged with murder and aggravated bodily harm. A second suspect, a minor, was also detained. Police have not identified the second suspect.

Reid is in jail on $350,000 bail.

What happened?

Around 4:00 pm on 20 January, officers responded to the shooting at the Whataburger parking lot on West Berry Street. Two teenagers, a girl and a boy, were taken to the hospital.

The boy died, the girl is still in the hospital.

The officers believed that all participants in the incident – the victims and the suspect – knew each other. An ISD spokesman for Fort Worth tells the WFAA that Reid retired from the county in 2021. The other suspect was also not a student at Pascal High School.

The mother of the deceased victim, 17-year-old Zakharia Trevino, spoke to the WFAA on Sunday to reveal more about her son.

Erica Trevino said that he was a junior at Easter School, a cook at that Wataburger, and was going to be a father in a few months. She said he was mortally wounded while trying to protect his 16-year-old cousin, a teenager who was badly injured.

“He did exactly what we taught him, that is, he defended,” she said. “His life was not just taken because of selfish acts. He changed all that by standing up for what he believed in, defending.”

The Trevino family has set up a fund for anyone who wants to help organize the funeral. Donations can be made through Cashapp to @EricaRico86.

Details on the third suspect have not been released.
