The Navy renamed the ship because of the connection with the Confederate officer
The US Navy has announced that another ship will be renamed to sever ties with the Confederate ship of the same name.
The US Navy will rename the oceanographic research vessel USNS Maury, which was named after Matthew Fontaine Maury.

Maury is considered by many to be one of the greatest pioneers of oceanography in history.
He was an officer in the US Navy for decades until the Civil War broke out when he refused to fight against his home state and joined the Confederacy.

USNS Maury will be renamed in honor of Marie Tharp, the 20th-century cartographer and oceanographer who first mapped the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
“As the history of our great nation develops, we must make an effort to recognize the figures who have positively impacted our society,” Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said of the name change.

He added: “This renaming honors just one of the many historical women who have had a significant impact not only on our navy, but on our country.”
Name removal process military installations, ships and other Confederate-inspired items with new names are underway.

The Pentagon announced Thursday that William A. LaPlante, Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Support, led Ministry of Defence move forward with the implementation of the renaming recommendations made by the Item Naming Commission last summer.
The Department of Defense statement said the Confederate base assignments were made during the “heyday of Jim Crow laws in the South” to garner support from the South and disregard black military personnel.
