North Texas father and son train to run, raise money for multiple sclerosis awareness

Steve Timmons and his son Andrew are gearing up for a 7-day, 177-mile hike through part of Colorado. They are runners in “MS Run the USA” relay.

“It was difficult for me to set goals for multiple sclerosis,” Steve Timmons said. “But my goals have gotten crazier and crazier with multiple sclerosis because I want to prove that I can do it.”

Timmons was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, also known as multiple sclerosis, 19 years ago. A disease of the central nervous system deprived him first of hearing, then of balance.

“If you imagine a lamp wire that loses its plastic coating and wears out, then the light will turn on and off,” Timmons said. “That’s what multiple sclerosis is.”

Timmons started cycling after he was diagnosed. Then I started running with an adaptive balance bike for balance during the pandemic.

“I’m amazed at what I’ve achieved,” Timmons said as he looked through photos of him running the Chicago Marathon, which he said took him about 9 hours, as well as the Cowtown 1/2 Marathon.

“This is my mission,” Timmons said. “To show people that whether it’s a marathon or a walk down the street, set a goal and just win the day.”

Timmons’ son, Andrew, will be running the MS Run the US relay with him.

“Just really proud of everything we do,” said Andrew Timmons. “And it just helped us get closer through something that I’ve always loved and just forgot about.”

Timmons said that multiple sclerosis changed his life in unexpected ways.

“Multiple sclerosis is probably the best thing that ever happened to me because it made me a better person,” said Steve Timmons. He hopes his run will help raise money for multiple sclerosis treatment and inspire others. “I can leave this world better than when I came.”

The MS Run the US starts in April in Santa Monica, California and ends in August in New York. The Timmons stage will be at the end of May.
