While Lunar New Year doesn’t start until January 22nd, you can celebrate the Year of the Rabbit starting Saturday, January 14th at many festive events in Houston. Enjoy plenty of arts and crafts, lion dances, Asian markets, traditional food, and parties for all ages.

The Lunar New Year is a celebration of the new year of the lunar calendar, also known as the lunisolar calendar, and the arrival of spring. Some of the traditions include meticulous house cleaning and food preparation, visits to ancestral graves, distribution of red envelopes, fireworks, and watching lion and dragon dances.

Houston Public Media is putting together a list of events showcasing Houston’s vibrant Asian community.

Meditation Center “Universal Door” | January 14 and 15 from 10:00 to 22:00.

People of all ages, cultures and backgrounds can celebrate at the Universal Door Meditation Center to meet Awakened Zen Masters Thich Die Thien and Thich Thong Hoi. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit several wake-up stalls, soy candles, snacks, games while watching the dragon dance.

POST Houston | Sunday, January 15, from 12:00 to 02:00.

Houston’s trendy hotspot, POST Houston, is celebrating the Year of the Rabbit with an Asian pop-up market, two lion dance performances, and a 21+ party at the X Atrium. People wishing to attend the Lunar New Year party must confirm their attendance.

Ion | Sunday, January 19, from 16:00 to 20:00.

#HaveANiceDayHTX at the Ion Lunar New Year celebration. Local food and produce vendors will show off their crafts at a local market event.

Chinese community center | January 21, 10:00 – 16:00

Since 2003, Houston’s Asian Quarter has hosted an annual tradition of celebrating the Lunar New Year and the city’s diversity. The Chinese Community Center invites everyone to an outdoor family event.

Pearl China Association | January 21, 14:00 – 22:00

The Pearlland China Association and the Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States (AYLUS) welcome the community to the Lunar New Year Festival and Gala at Pearlland Junior High West. Artists, students and local residents will perform at the event. Starting at 2:00 pm, guests will enjoy the day creating origami and pottery, games, food trucks, robotics and more. The Lunar New Year celebration will start at 19:00.

Ginger Calais in Hermann Park | January 21, 11:00 – 12:00

Enjoy an outdoor lion dance performance at Ginger Kale next to the gift shop.

Discovery Green | Sunday, January 22, from 17:00 to 20:00.

Spend an evening at Discovery Green to the beat of the drums. Discovery Green will host a family event with food vendors, Nanta drumming and puppet dancing.

Nails by Yen| Saturday, January 28, from 14:00 to 15:00.

Community members can watch the lion dance outside of Nails by Yen in Sugar Land.

POST Houston | Saturday, February 4, 22:00 – Sunday, February 5, 23:30.

Enjoy arts and crafts, a night market food vendor, a dance flash mob, and a light sculpture presentation during POST’s Lunar New Year’s Night Market during their two-day event.
