Without Biden’s help, New York was left with plans to “decompress” migrants: Eric Adams

New York City is implementing its own “decompression strategy” to deal with President Biden’s growing refugee crisis, Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday, as the Big Apple braces for a hefty 10-year backlog in processing asylum seekers..

Adams acknowledged that his administration must now develop its own strategy to help avert a growing $4.6 million crisis after the federal government failed to step up and deliver aid.

“We understand that in addition to calling on the federal government to develop a decompression strategy, we must develop our own decompression strategy,” Adams told reporters at an unrelated news conference in Brooklyn.

Hizzoner’s remarks come after The Post reported this week that meetings with asylum seekers at the New York City Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office are fully booked through October 2032, meaning migrants here may have to wait. nearly ten years to get into immigration court.

The backlog could mean Adams’ recently unveiled plan, which calls for some migrants to be relocated to other states, could lead to disarray.

Adams acknowledged on Wednesday that ICE’s piling up of appointments could offset his resettlement plan because migrants still need to be in the city to keep their scheduled immigration date.

“The biggest barrier to people moving is their inability to work,” Adams said.

“It’s unbelievable that the federal government says, ‘Get a man and he won’t be able to work for at least six months.’ That you are responsible for taking care of their health, their nutrition, their education.

“This is a strain on our city and we know we have to take on this decompression strategy on our own.”

More than 50,000 migrants have now flooded into the city since last spring, including 31,000 living in 101 emergency shelters. The total daily cost of housing, food and other services is estimated at $4.6 million.

As part of the city’s plan, Adams last week announced the creation of the Office of Asylum Seekers, a new government agency that will provide a 24-hour processing center for incoming migrants.

He said the workers will focus on helping adult migrants complete the paperwork required to obtain federal work permits, as well as providing them and their families with “food and a safe place to sleep.”

Adams did not reveal the location of the “centralized” center or give details of its annual budget.
