Lillard’s 36 points helped the Blazers defeat the Mavs 136–119.

PORTLAND. With no Christian Wood to worry about, the Portland Trail Blazers threw a huge blanket over Luka Doncic Saturday night at the Fashion Center and forced anyone else from the Dallas Mavericks to beat them.

Results: Blazers 136, Mavs 119.

The same two teams will face off again on Sunday at 8:00 pm in the same arena before the Mavs (24-20) return home to host the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.

The Blazers decided to double Doncic and take the ball out of his hands almost every time he touched the basketball. This meant that Portland was willing to risk the Mavs not being able to beat them unless Doncic was heavily involved in the scoring.

This strategy worked as Portland led 71–56 at halftime while Doncic scored only five points as a walker on just 2 of 8 shots in the first half.

This was the fewest points Doncic had scored in the first half of that season, though he was also limited to just three points in the second half of a January 5 game against the Boston Celtics. Doncic’s previous low in the first half this season was seven points against Washington on November 10.

Doncic finished with a season-high 15 points in 36 minutes. He was 7-of-19 from the field, 0-of-5 from 3-point ground and 1-of-6 on the free throw line, and had six rebounds and 10 assists.

Spencer Dinwiddie led the Mavs with 25 points on 8-of-12 shots, Reggie Bullock scored 24 points on 8-of-10 3-pointers, and Tim Hardaway Jr. finished with 10 points.

While the Blazers handcuffed Doncic, the Mavs, especially Bullock and Dinwiddie, got to work. Dinwiddie scored 15 points in the first half, while Bullock’s eight triples are a career high for him.

However, the Blazers (20-22) were able to break their five-game losing streak using well-aimed shots. After the third quarter, Portland was already ahead, 106–90, and shooting 56.7% from the floor and 40.6% from three-point arc.

The Mavs were also at their peak after three quarters, with 52.4 percent from the field and 44.1 percent from downtown. But the Blazers were on such a pace that they were able to lead by a full 26 points in the fourth quarter.

The Mavs put Doncic and other starters out of the game for good after Damian Lillard scored to give Portland a 122–101 lead with seven minutes left in the game.

Lillard leads the Blazers with 36 points, five rebounds and 10 assists, Yusuf Nurkic had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Anferni had 21 points and Jerami Grant added 16 points and five boards.

Wood sprained his right ankle late Thursday against the Los Angeles Lakers 119-115 in double overtime. The Mavs not only missed his defense, but could use the 18.2 points he’s averaging this season.

Overall, the Mavs scored 52.4 percent from the floor, including a healthy 47.8 percent from downtown. On the other hand, the Blazers made 55.7% of shots, including 41.5% of three-pointers.

The Blazers also had a massive 47-25 lead on the boards and a 50-28 points lead in the paint.
